Brock Osweiler to start for Texans in Wild Card playoff game against the Raiders

With Tom Savage currently in concussion protocol, the Houston Texans have decided to hand the keys back to Brock Osweiler, as he is set to start against the Oakland Raiders on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien gave the media more insight on this decision during a press conference on Tuesday.

“I thought Brock did some really good things on Sunday with his teammates,” O’Brien said. “He almost brought us all the way back. He did a nice job and we have a lot of confidence in him and he’s going to go out there and play well on Saturday.”

Last Sunday, Osweiler came in relief of the injured Savage to complete 21 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown and no interceptions. He also found the end zone on the ground in the fourth quarter.

After taking a hard hit to the head on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter, Savage was removed from the game and evaluated for a concussion. He initially returned to the field to take a knee to close out the first half, but was reevaluated during the intermission and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. If Savage is cleared before Saturday, he will serve as a backup in the Wild Card game.

In the final regular season game of the season, Osweiler performed much better than he had in recent memory, and guided the Texans to a trio of scoring drives in the second half, which helped Houston return to a competitive state. The Texans found a way to score through the air in the red zone and had success running a no-huddle offense. O’Brien told reporters he felt Osweiler benefited from backing up Savage during the past two weeks and learned a lot throughout the whole process.

“When you become the backup, you’re able to absorb a lot more,” O’Brien said. “You’re able to observe in practice. In the games, in the meetings, and I think it helped him.”

In 14 starts this season, Osweiler has completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,957 yards, along with 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. However, if Osweiler plays against the Raiders like he did the Titans, the Texans will be in great shape, as their defense and run game are already stealler.
