NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly will fine Cowboys owner Jerry Jones millions of dollars

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell intends on fining Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones millions of dollars for challenging the commissioner’s contract renewal and repeatedly speaking out against Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension.

Ken Belson of The New York Times was the first to report the news.

According to Belson, Jones’ punishment will be publicized in the approaching weeks, but primarily focuses on his attempts to damage Goodell’s contact negotiations. Jones was disgruntled about Elliott’s six-game ban once the NFL completed its investigation into domestic violence allegations filed against the star running back.

Elliott was neither arrested nor charged for the incident which his ex-girlfriend accused him of domestic violence. The running back appealed the case in federal court, but was denied and thus his suspension was upheld.

Jones was one of the owners in the compensation committee that decided Goodell’s contract extension. He wanted a different contract than what was suggested and agreed upon in May of 2017. Jones went on to hire an attorney and was ready to sue the committee in an effort to stop Goodell’s extension from being completed, but eventually eased off his threat and no suit was ever brought up.

A Cowboys spokesperson said the team was oblivious of the looming punishment, via the New York Times. The NFL declined to comment on the matter to The New York Times.

Goodell’s five-year extension was settled in December and could potentially be worth up to $200 million.
